Great for light savoury tomato dishes and sauces. 100% tomato and nothing else. The Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio or sometimes just Pomodorino Vesuviano, is a grape tomato grown in Naples, Italy, and has PDO protected status, which was granted in 2009. The cultivation area is restricted to 18 comuni around Mount Vesuvius, pretty much all within the Vesuvius National Park. Joe Cicala, executive chef of Le Virtú in Philadelphia: “They grow in a mix of volcanic soil with a healthy amount of sand and crushed seashells,” says Cicala. “This allows an intense minerality with the faintest flavor of raw shellfish.” “They should be barely cooked. We can’t get enough of them.”
